Cassie - Data Analyst, Detroit Fire Department

---

This is my friend Cassie. She is an economist who recently accepted a job as a data analyst with the Detroit Fire Department. She is responsible for finding creative ways for the fire department to use its limited resources to squelch the city's seemingly unlimited number of fires. Because of her new job Cassie contacted me last week to get a new headshot. Twenty minutes before Cassie arrived, a house two doors down from where we were shooting caught fire.

The fire department showed up almost immediately. However, they were not able to immediate service the fire because nearby hydrants were out of order. They did manage to save the houses on either side; and by extension the house where we were shooting. As glowing orange embers streaked through the winter night sky and landed on the house we were in, we earnestly thought the house we were in would catch fire. Luckily, it didn't and we managed to finish the portrait session.
I made a couple of conventional headshot portraits and then – with the smell of fire still in the air – made a couple of frames that paid homage to the night's unfortunate irony.

Fighting fire in a city with limited resources is a daunting task. Luckily, Cassie is one of the smartest people I know. If anyone can help the DFD accomplish this task, it's her.
